What soothes a savage Dwarf
Who: Thorin Oakenshield and anyone!
What: Explorin' and whatever else
When: Now
Where: The Music Room
Rating: Ehhh PG-13 because Thorin and his language
Considering how easily Thorin gets lost, he probably shouldn't be wandering around the castle unsupervised. But, being the stubborn Dwarf that he is, he's exploring anyway. Besides, how can he really get lost if he doesn't know where he's going?
The heir of Durin took a few turns, climbed a few staircases and somehow found himself in a room filled with instruments. He smiled a bit to himself, perhaps there was hope for this place yet! Thorin walked across the floor, blue eyes scanning the variety of instruments just laying about, begging to be played.
Of course the violin caught his eye.
Thorin had decent skill with the violin at least, but there were certainly other Dwarves better at it than he. His education had mostly focused on politics and battle strategy - but of course he knew some aspects of Dwarf culture. The violin was one of those aspects.
He picked it up carefully, taking the bow in one hand and holding the neck of the instrument with the other. His eyelids fell a bit as he looked to the strings and began to draw the bow across them, starting a slow, somber tune at first before he started moving quicker. Soon a fast, merry tune echoed through the room. Thorin began to smile to himself as he continued to play.

Soon enough, there'll be a robot around Thorin's height leaning against the door frame, whistling along. Hope you don't mind duets.

As he played, Thorin turned to face the newcomer more squarely. Skillfully he continued to draw the bow across the strings of the violin, picking up the pace of his tune.
This would be a challenge, but a friendly one: He was curious to see how long this one could last this way, and if he could whistle fast enough to keep up with Thorin's tune.

Him not being able to last wont be a question of him tiring out either, being a machine he doesn't exactly have lungs to wear out. He'll stop when Thorin does, unless Thorin starts to play something that bores him.]

Dwarves do not play fast music just to play fast music. That would be a waste of talent and time indeed.
Thorin even found himself turning and kicking his feet in time to the music as he continued to play. Dwarf music tended to have that effect, at least in his world: people of Middle Earth could rarely find themselves able to sit still while listening to Dwarf music.

When Blues see's Thorin kicking his feet, he'll start to tap his foot along with it. He generally tries to avoid letting people know how he's feeling or what's on his mind. But showing that he's enjoying himself this once can't be that bad, can it?

He heaves a deep breath before flashing a smile to the other man.
"You've some skill indeed, lad!" Thorin chuckles. "Just by whistling you gave me a run for my gold! Who are you?"
no subject
"I could say the same about to you, it's not often I find someone so talented playing in here." He'll smile in return, something that doesn't happen very often.
"You can call me Blues, and you are?"
no subject
"I've been playing since I was a wee lad," Thorin chuckles as he recalls the memory. "My father insisted, 'tis a Dwarf tradition, you see!"
He bows his head to acknowledge the name.
"I am Thorin, son of Thrain, son of Thror, King Under the Mountain - but you may call me just Thorin if it pleases you."
no subject
"Thorin certainly rolls of the tongue better."
no subject
"Aye, that it does - Thorin Oakenshield. But, as a descendent in the line of Durin, I must introduce myself as such. So tell me Blues, from where do you hail?"
no subject
"I can't say I hail from anywhere to be honest. I've stayed here longer than I have any other place in the world I came from. This place is more a home to me than there."
no subject
Thorin is actually surprised by this. He sets the violin down beside the other instruments where he found it.
"Most I have spoken to say this castle, while it has its pleasures and perks, is very much akin to a cage - and a fickle one at that," Thorin glanced around, staring at the walls that surrounded them as they spoke. "I can't say as I've ever heard anyone say that they enjoy this place more so than their world of origin."
no subject
"It may be a cage yes, and in a sense that can be frustrating. But, it's a still a place where I can live and for the most part do as I choose. That's enough for me take this place over the other."
no subject
"But we shall not speak of such sad things!" Thorin forced his own cheerfulness and managed a smile. "Do you play an instrument, lad? Or do you just whistle?"
He does not mean the question in a condescending manner, he's merely curious.
no subject
"Originally I just whistled, since I've arrived here I've picked up an instrument or two." The guitar he picked up pretty much right away, he's still learning how to play the piano.
Speaking of a guitar, he's going to go and pick one up now.
no subject
"An odd instrument to pick, but I trust you can play it well enough," Thorin smiled. "Shall we make it a competition then?"
Think 'dueling banjos' but with a violin and guitar...
no subject
"I certainly think we could." He'll stand ready to play, but he'll courteous enough to let Thorin start them off.
no subject
He draws it across the strings at differing angles and squeezes different fingers on the neck of the violin against the strings and plays a series of ten notes, then pulls the bow away and waits for Blues' response.

He's rather enjoying himself! It's been a very long time since he just sat back and enjoyed some nice music, particularly with another person.
