Who: Rookie (
helljumper) and Kallen Kouzuki (
ardor)
What: Birthday dinner thing in the forest.
When: March 29th, late afternoonish.
Where: ... Some random spot out of the way with lots of trees. I'unno.
Rating: PG/PG-13. Most likely. :3
[It'd taken him a good portion of the day to set things up, and even longer to make the place look exactly how he had wanted it by the time the sun started to disappear behind the trees. Only when he was certain that everything was in place, and he made the quick trip to and from the castle in order to set out the food, could the Rookie finally be found sitting on the steps that led to the inside of the castle.
Simply because he was waiting for a particular someone, and for that reason appeared a bit more restless than normal as he idly tossed a stray rock or two into the grass in front of him.]

Hey, hope you weren't waiting too long.
no subject
Not really, no. [Another blink, before he was leaning backwards just enough to glance up at her with a laugh.] You ready to go?
no subject
[Despite that, she's grinning back, holding out a hand to help pull him up.]
no subject
Hey, I was on the ground less near the end of it.
no subject
[She does pause when she gets a better look at what he's wearing.] Nice jacket. Did I miss a filter? I thought you said casual...
no subject
Although he did take a second to look down at his outfit, before looking back up towards her with a tiny, little shrug.] Figured the jacket wouldn't hurt.
But come on, we're wasting moonlight. [And the food's probably getting cold.]
no subject
Okay, okay, we can go. But there is moonlight all night. [Kallen laughs a little and heads down the steps, assuming he'll follow then take the lead.]
no subject
Doesn't mean we're still not wasting it.

You're taking me into the forest?
no subject
[Whether or not he's saying that to be more suspicious (
he is), Rookie eventually gives her a grin and - once he was close enough - moves to carefully place both of his hands over her eyes and then rest his chin on her shoulder.]But have I ever given you a reason not to trust me?
no subject
You're damn lucky you haven't. Just remember I know where you sleep most of the time. [Grumble grumble.]
Hurry up and take me wherever we're going.
no subject
[... Never mind the fact it's late to begin with, but at least he'll still be able to catch her if he doesn't mess up his own footing. Either way, he'll go ahead and start to lead them carefully towards the forest and the clearing within.]
no subject
Why all the secrecy, though? [She's walking slowly, despite the reassurance he offers. It's instinctive.]
no subject
[He'll glance around her shoulders to make sure there were no tree roots or rocks in the way, before he'll continue to lead them onwards. Seeming, oddly enough, a bit excited and worried and nervous the closer they got.]
Just a few more steps, and... [Away go his hands, revealing the lovely little area in front of them. Bright, little lights decorating trees like a bunch of fireflies and stars. All of which were surrounding a table set up in the middle, capable of seating two, but big enough to hold the assortment of foods that were resting on top of it -- with the added bonus of squirrels, apparently. Ones that Rookie didn't seem to notice at this very second.] Here we are!
no subject
[Kallen blinks a few times to let her vision adjust, and when it does, she just stares. It's all she really can do with all that's in front of her. All the different colored lights in the trees surrounding them, the table with food under a freaking canopy. She's well aware that residents aren't able to wish for things that far out, so that means he had--
She glances back to him, back to the scenery, then back to him, completely at a loss for words.]
This is... I can't... [Her face is a mixture of confusion and awe and shock, and she's mainly just floored by what's laid out. Welp.]
no subject
Which is why there's only the smallest shift of an eyebrow upwards and a small, somewhat embarrassed smile.] Too much?
[
Also the squirrels are still safe from being noticed. For now. Stupid squirrels.]no subject
You are such a piece of work. I really hope you know that. [Her smile is definitely stil present, and if anything, it's grown. It's fairly easy to tell how touched she is by everything.]
This is just... [She just gives a weak laugh.] Yeah.
no subject
Guess I'll try to cut back on the lights next time. [Then he'll pause, looking a little more serious as he eyed some of the decorations off to the side.] But I figured it wouldn't hurt to try and do something special for your birthday.
no subject
[Her smile falters, though, when she FINALLY sees the squirrels on the table. They see her, too, and quickly scamper off.]
Uh, Rook? [She points to the fleeing animals. Should they get closer, they'll see the mess of now ruined food gracing the table.]
no subject
[Which is true, but just as he turned to gesture for her to lead the way, he takes notice of that look. Which only makes him quirk an eyebrow up almost instantly, before he was turning around to look in the direction she was pointing at.] What?
[Oh. Oh wait - no! No, no, no, no, no!]
Son of a bitch. [Yeah he's just, going to pick up a rock and chuck it at one of the fleeing rodents as he starts to quickly making his way over. Noooo, you little food stealing bastards. ; ;]
no subject
She stares for another moment before sitting in one of the chairs present with a sigh.]
Well, this sucks.
no subject
Rookie sighs, letting his shoulders slump forwards as he stared down at the food in front of him. Having half a mind to just, chuck another rock into the forest in annoyance, but it's an idea he eventually drops. Instead, he moves to take the seat across from her, allowing his forehead to rest against the palm of his head as he stared down at the mess.]
Yeah. [... Well. At least the cake looked untouched. :c]
no subject
Hey. [Kallen's not quite relaxed yet, but she needs him to pay attention.] You know I love this, right? Squirrels are stupid, but we're not going to let them ruin things. That's giving them too much credit. I mean, the only thing they really touched were the croutons. Talk about shitty taste.
[Rookie gets a slight nudge before she adds something else.]
I don't need all this to enjoy tonight. I'm perfectly fine with what I have right here. [She means him, and to emphasize that point, she pokes him in the chest.] Got it?
no subject
Though her words did happen to make that smile brighten further, just enough where he couldn't help that slightly entertained chuckle as he lightly shook his head -- only to be caught off guard by the nudge.] Mm?
[A blink, then another at the poke, before his features dwindled down to something a little more neutral. Though it was brief, since it was just as quickly replaced by a soft smile, one that was a lot more sincere then the kind he usually gave.]
Yeah. [He nods, slowly. Tightening his grip a little around her waist to give a one-armed 'thank you' hug of sorts.] I got it.
no subject
But when she spots the cake (though not its finer details), she gives off a slightly disappointed noise.]
It's a shame they got the cake, too.
no subject
Though there's an inner wince at the comment, before shifting a side look out towards the forest.]
Actually... it looks pretty much the same. [lmao sob.]
no subject
Her free hand reaches up and cups his cheek, prompting him to hopefully turn his head back to look her in the eye. Regardless, Kallen finally says something.]
I may hate repeating myself, but I think I don't mind so much right now. [She leans in with a smile, her voice softer now.] Thank you.
no subject
Feeling her hand, though, does cause him to steal a glance back her way. Only to listen quietly, as he usually did, before that hint of red seeped into his expression again, and caused him to rub the back of his neck with a light laugh. Because yeah he's super embarrassed now.]
Ah, you don't have to -- [Pause, before he's giving another small smile and shaking his head.] You're welcome.
no subject
Hey, stop that. [Meaning the shaking of his head. Kallen shifts a little so she's able to lean up and kiss him without contorting too much, and that's what she does. Her smile won't leave her face, so the kiss may feel a little silly.]
no subject
Hey. [He'll lean back a bit, doing his best to appear as innocent as he can, before making the attempt to plop just a little frosting on the tip of her nose with a cheshire grin.] Happy Birthday.
no subject
Cute, Rook. Very cute. [In 'retaliation' she moves in and places her nose against his cheek, quickly nuzzling the icing on to it before he can protest. As soon as they're both frosted, she pulls back again.]
It's a good look for you.
no subject
You think so? Personally like the way it looks on you a little more.
no subject
[She manages to say all this while crinkling her nose, the feeling of the icing finally settling in. Now she can also see the color of the icing on his face, and a curious expression appears.]
Red icing?
no subject
Except it just as quickly breaks into another smile before he's taking care of the icing still on his finger. He does make a point to pause at the question, however.]
Ah. Yeah. [A small nod behind her.] It's... not a perfect replica, but I tried.
no subject
Oh. Well, that one's a shocker, and it was obviously not what she was expecting (not that she was really expecting something specific). She sits there at a loss for words for a few moments before finally just saying what was on her mind.]
You actually remembered that?
no subject
no subject
Yes, good cake, only reason to remember that day, isn't it?
no subject
I was kidding.
no subject
You're insufferable. How many times to do you expect me to say thank you for this?
no subject
I don't expect you to say or do anything. This is your birthday, not mine. [A small nudge with his hand, laughing.] So enjoy it.
[... Or what's left of it, thanks to those stupid fawking squirrels.]

I guess you have a point there.
