Welcome to Castle Economics! I hope you're a good cook or you like sewing. Wait, what's that? No, not at all? Well ... hopefully one of your more enthusiastic fellows will be a good influence on you, grumpypants.

The room you're currently trapped in is pretty large and separated in the center by a heavy curtain, currently pulled back. On one side of the curtain are rows of sewing machines, and on the other is a kitchen area.

What do you do?

MEALTIME

[Breakfast, lunch, dinner, midnight snack -- whatever. You cooked it, now eat it! Or mooch off your neighbor.]

[She used way too much cheese for this omelet and not enough bacon, and there are bits of egg-shell scattered throughout, but South is starved, and even if it's a little burnt?]

Well, at least it beats an MRE.

[She's peering over her shoulder, squinting.]

I think that depends what era you're talking about.

What are you talking about? They've been horrible for all eras. [South's imagining if they had found a way to make them any easier before the 26th century, she wouldn't have such an aversion to them.]

1920's horrible is a bit different than 1950's horrible, for example. Sardines versus peanut butter.

Some things you expect to taste weird, but there's nothing sadder then fucked up peanut butter.

Which is why I'm glad my [burnt and riddled with eggshells] omelet still tastes like an omelet. [mostly.]

Yeah, adds texture. Makes it interesting.

What's an MRE?

'Meal Ready to Eat', which is a misnomer because it's not very meal-like and it's not very good eating. It is ready whenever you need it, though, so they nailed that part. [taking a bite of her eggs and. Yeah. Pausing because yich but then continuing on because she doesn't want to appear weak or anything.]

[caught that pause! She glances at the omelet and elects not to ask, looking back up] Like a final resort for the culinarily-handicapped, then. Or maybe a deterrent.

Well, it's mostly a military thing. Caught out in a foxhole for days, no chance to run to the grocery store, you know?

Yeah. [a shrug, and she take a bite out of the sandwich, as if grateful for its very existence -- which she is] Funny how militaries can spend billions on developing new ways to kill people but not invest in letting those alive have okay food.

Oh god I know, right? [Eyes lingering on that egg-shell-free sandwich.]

[...yup, South, she sure noticed that. Sheesh, it's only a bunch of condiments, ham and lettuce between two slices of bread, make your own]

So you've just been eating MREs when you're outdoors? I'm feeling cheated by all those war training movies now.

Well, no, just when things get ... hairy. Back at base we had a mess hall and real-ish food. [No, she is too damned stubborn to back out on her horrible creation now. :| ]

[know what, she won't bother questioning the "-ish" either]

Cooked by support staff. I should have thought of that. [although the thought of a soldier who has trouble field-cooking is still somewhat astounding, as the look on her face probably shows]

Why didn't you? [Well South's failcooking is a result of her just being her, and not anything to do with the soldiering.]

[In response to that face she pauses a moment, then delivers a very dry,] What.

Like I said. The movies lied. [shrug. w/e.] I don't actually know what you learn after enlisting and stuff.
