But really, Zack is a SOLDIER -- with all the proper training that entails -- and if nothing else, he knows how to respond to a surprise attack.
His counter comes as fast as Cloud's initial attack, leading with the back of the blade and not the edge. He's not holding back any more than Cloud is, partly because it's a dishonor to them both if he does, and partly because he simply does not wish to.
