It's a strange story, made considerably stranger by the way he suddenly finds himself watching her gently coddle Joshua as she tells it. If it makes him uncomfortable, he'll never say. The thought even crosses his mind that he could probably get up and quietly leave right now without either of them noticing. And he might have, if that didn't also defeat the purpose.

Once he reminds himself that he's committed, he sets the drink in his hand down on the table near him just hard enough to make a sound. Not obnoxiously rude, but loud enough to remind them that that he's here before she goes on.
