Peter listened as he lined up for his next shot. He didn't grow up like that: his father didn't leave, but the man was never really there, either. Maybe that was why Peter always tried so hard when Mary came along-- and more recently with Penny. He wanted to love on them, to show them that their father would always be there.

"We can't help it," he concluded. "Kind hearts like ours. We love people even if they don't deserve it." He hit the ball harder than necessary and bounced it into a water trap.
