[she looks more disturbed at his mirth than his wrath, in perfect honesty. when his fingers touch her cheek, she does cringe, but she doesn't afford him the honor of letting it reach her eyes. she just swallows - and it's the last chance she gets to breathe freely before his fingers close around her throat. she just stares at him. this is it, isn't it. hell.
her mind is so full that she doesn't even really get to register exactly what's going through it - so many things. so many people who are going to feel as though they failed ... especially Bond, where the hell is Bond, she should have kept him with her, and Katniss ... and ... and ... Christ, who's going to tell Gary, what's August going to think, who's going to help Allen - she's thinking more of her life here than the fact that even if he does end it, she'd only be out for two weeks. that technicality doesn't even register, for her. she's too used to death being real.
so all she can do is freeze, and stare. damn. she'd hoped she'd be braver than this when it came to it, but the truth is, it's taking all she's got to not show how much this terrifies her. and somehow she realizes, dimly, that she's more determined not to give him that satisfaction than to actually survive this]
