"I'm not denying that he has his uses...and he has come to our rescue time and again when we required it of him," Thorin conceded. "I'm just saying, his constant vigil could have saved us plenty of wasted effort."

Although, once he said it, it occurred to Thorin that Gandalf wasn't a babysitter - he shouldn't have to constantly monitor the Dwarves' actions. Besides, Thorin wasn't exactly sure he wanted Gandalf constantly monitoring him. He was an Elf-friend, after all, when push came to shove.
