Brutal Boot Camp - Day 3

What: Day 3 in a week of rainbows and sunshine and kittens
When: May 13th
Where: A forest right on the border of the Dead Zone
Rating: S for Shenanigans (Shouldn't be more than PG13 at most)

The dawn of the third day. By now, you all should be pretty accustomed to your makeshift beds and tents, your stomachs either empty or angry at you for eating something bad or not enough, a bit sunburned, covered in bites, and not ready to get up at all.

Which means time to wake up, of course. Today covers some more survival essentials. This is what you came out here to learn, isn't it? They don't call it the hard way for nothing. Rise and shine, soldiers, it's time to wake up and move out!

[Today starts off with Alleyne making makeshift bandages and splints from the flora around her. Sticks and stones may break bones, but they can also help set and mend them. She also seems pretty occupied mashing up stuff into a thick, gooey paste. What is that vile concoction shes working on?]

Spearfishing

[Come lunchtime, Alleyne makes her way over to the creek nearby, wielding a sharp stick and eying the movements of the fish in it closely. She points to other sticks like it on the ground along with some sharp rocks, encouraging you to make a spear point on your own.

Hope you like seafood.]

Notebook Hunt

[And after all that, Alleyne gives everyone the evening off. She had more planned, but decided to let them soak in what they've learned so far, opting to scout the area diligently.

Eventually she comes across a small scrap of paper, taunting her.

Oh yeah. That's her notebook paper alright. Whoever did this is going to get their asses hung from a branch and left to bake in the hot sun, turned into their emergency jerky supply if needed.

This just makes her look more, the paper crumpled tight in her hand. Feel free to bug her or go off and do your own thing. Just be warned she does look rather pissed.]

And she's staring at the gooey paste. God, whatever happened to rubbing alcohol and sterilization techniques?]

[Picking up a spear, and...]

This seems a little dangerous.

[Tim doesn't make his spear hastily, putting some time and effort into making it nice and sharp. Then he goes over to the river and stands there for quite awhile, watching the fish swim by. He can almost hear Bruce's voice telling him this isn't about how fast you can stab the fish (unless you have super speed or some other way superhuman way of getting them), it's mostly about patience and waiting for the right moment to strike. Wait for the prey to come to you. So he stands there as still as he possibly can for a few long minutes until one fish comes right in front of him. With a quick jab, he spears it and grins triumphantly as he holds it up.]

[Ooh this looks fun! Aradia gets a stick too.]

I suppose it doesn't matter if I say I'm a vegetarian...?

[Aradia gives her an odd look.] Then what are you going fishing for?

Telling Miss Alleyne 'no thanks' is a lot harder than one would think.

Just tell her you don't eat fish. I'm sure she'll understand.

[Nods] Yeah, ever since I got here. About fourteen months now.

Then you surely do know her better than I. I've lost track of just how long I've been here, though... time seems to work different between these worlds.

[Hehe. Aradia could tell you how long she's been here down to the second, but she'll be nice and not show off.]

Did you want me to ask her for you?

... Hm, no, I suppose I should do the mature thing and ask her myself. It's unbecoming of me not to try.

Okay. Let me know how that goes, all right? [She sits down and pulls off her boots in preparation for wading.]

Yeah we do. It's just usually all prepackaged and in pill form.

[what you got here is a mushed up salad, lady.]

Where everything is all wrapped up for you. Have you ever seen all the bags and cans of stuff in the kitchen? That's pretty much prepackaged food.

No, they're common in stores where I come from. So all the meds and bandages are like that too.

How strange. Who makes them, I wonder?

Factories, companies. People mass produce these things and then sell them.

Mass production? Are there no artisans in your world? No tailors to make bandages, or doctors to make potions?

I thought tailors just sew clothes.

And doctors usually figure out what's wrong with you, not make medicines. That's left to the drug companies.

During times of war, when bandages are needed and in short supply, a tailor may be asked to create such a thing with the scraps from his work. Otherwise you're correct, any layperson may stitch together cloth ...

[BUT WAIT this makes no sense, so she stops talking and just stares for a second.] "Drug companies"?

[oh yeah. That makes sense.

Good thing she's not the sort to use the phrase "pharmaceutical company."] They make medicines. Manufacture them and sell them. We just call them drug companies for some reason.

[Peeta is wearing about the same expression. He has quite a few scratches from being so clumsy. He leans in near Natsuki, speaking in a whisper.]

We don't have to eat that or anything, do we?

Strange, to have entire companies for the purpose of creating medicine.

I'm pretty sure they make a lot of money. And if you can make a ton of money, you can bet that people will do it.

I really really hope not. Not that I'd want to put that over a cut or anything either.

Hm. I suppose that is true, if doctors do not have the skills to create medicine where you are from.
