Summer Solstice Storytime
Who: Anyone!
What: Telling stories! Bonfires! Snacks!
When: June 19, early evening to ????
Where: The edge of the castle grounds
Rating: PG probably unless someone's story is awful
Alleria had been in this clearing setting everything up for the past few hours, because she was a complete and terrible perfectionist.
She hadn't been completely satisfied with how everything was arranged, but when people started filtering in, she didn't really have much of a choice but to accept it.
There are bonfires all around, with wreaths of stone to keep anyone from falling into them. There are also baskets filled with nuts and fruit, as well as blankets to cuddle up or sit on and felled trees to relax on. Tables are covered with various elven wines (sweet and fruity), as well as juices and milks for those so disinclined toward alcohol.
In the center of all this is a small platform on which performers are meant to do their thing.

STORIES
"Thank you all for coming. I hope that sharing stories -- the myths, legends, and fables of our home worlds -- will help us better understand one another as a community. Though we all come from different places, because of the nature of this place, we are all now one.
"And," she adds with a small smile, "when children are first learning about their own community, of course the easiest way to do that is with stories."
She nods, her expression returning to its usual no-nonsense look. "Please do not interrupt the storytellers. You may ask questions once they are done. If you must conversate, please relocate away from the stage so you do not distract anyone.
"And if any are being disruptive, I will take care of it personally."

"Seven thousand years before the founding of Quel'Thalas, which itself was nearly seven thousand years ago, all the continents on my home world of Azeroth were one. The nocturnal ancestors of my race lived in harmony with nature; they were beautiful and terrible beings known as 'kaldorei,' which means 'children of the stars' in the old tongue.
"Not all kaldorei lived in harmony with nature, however. The upper caste of kaldorei society, called 'Highborne' or 'quel'dorei,' experimented with arcane magic and were forever seeking new sources of power. One such source was the Well of Eternity, around which the kaldorei society was built. Not content with the gifts the Well granted, the Highborne corrupted it for their own purposes under the leadership of Queen Azshara.
"But it did not go as planned.
"The Well imploded with such a force that it consumed a great deal of the single continent, which eventually split into three. This is known among my people as the Great Sundering; in the center of the world where the kaldorei's ancient civilization once stood is now an eternally swirling vortex in the center of the ocean known as the Maelstrom.
"Many kaldorei escaped the Well's implosion. Many Highborne did not -- Queen Azshara and her followers were swallowed into the sea, never to be seen again.
"But some Highborne realized the madness of Azshara before the Great Sundering, and also escaped. These few remaining Highborne tried to form a new civilization alongside the remaining kaldorei, but were not welcome. The other kaldorei did not trust those they once called their kin, if only because they were born into nobility."
She pauses, a slight frown crossing her features. Though it isn't clear to the elf how much of this story is legend and how much of it is true, the idea of kin banishing kin is obviously distasteful to her.
"The remaining Highborne, led by Dath'Remar Sunstrider, braved the sea in search of a new home, where they would not be persecuted for the legacy they had been born into. Eventually they landed on a separate continent, and so founded the Kingdom of Quel'Thalas, the home of all quel'dorei.
"Dath'Remar was a great leader and also clever -- he had in his possession a vial from the Well of Eternity, which he used to create a new fount of power, the Sunwell. But this time, the quel'dorei would take care not to abuse its powers, and instead be thankful for the boon granted them."
