Miles Edgeworth sat upon his bed, back rested against the headboard. He had a book in hand, reading a particular passage on cosmic rays when the narrating astrophysicist had delved into a particularly fond memory of his childhood in which he would hide and wait in a tree after class for another young friend of his, in order to procure a particular piece of confectionary that was otherwise forbidden to him at home. This friend would provide him with his sugary fix while he would help his friend with his homework. Clearly, a mutually beneficial arrangement.

...Not that it had much to do with cosmic ray spallation, in any case.

Edgeworth smirked, reminded promptly of a fond memory of his own. In his youth, he was also quite fond of climbing trees. Such a simple, relaxing activity gave the shy, introverted boy a moment of solace whenever he wasn't being drilled for an upcoming flute recital or playing a rousing game of chess with... well, the faceless person in his memory.

He could almost picture himself on one of the top-most branches of his favourite tree as a child. He would lay on his back as his eyes traced out patterns of sky shining through the leaves, as his little fingers stripped away small chunks of bark.

"Miles?"

In the younger form of his memories, he looked down at his spiky-haired friend standing at the base of the trunk with those large, blue eyes peering back up at him.

Little Phoenix, on the other hand, grabbed onto the lowest branch of the tree and began flailing about, looking for a foothold.

"I'm coming up too!"

"I don't think there's enough space up..."

His train of thought was broken with the sight of Phoenix slipping a bit on a branch.

"N-no that's not how you do-- You're gonna fall, Phoenix!"

"I'm... not gonna... fall!"

But, unfortunately, his footing slipped again and his fingers gave out, and he dropped back down to the ground. It wasn't a far enough fall to do any lasting damage--he hadn't made it very far in the first place--but tears sprang to his eyes at the sharp sting of hitting the ground. He picked up his hand to wipe his eyes, and noticed his palm was scuffed and bleeding.

Don't cry, don't cry, don't cry, not in front of Miles!

"Told you." Miles groaned. He started his way down the tree, deftly but carefully.

"Did you hurt something? Let me see yo--...ooh." He winced at the bleeding scrape.

[takethat]

"I'm not hurt!" Phoenix boasted, hiding his scraped hand behind his back. "I fall out of trees all the time! I'm tough!"

Only a couple of tears had escaped before he'd put on his brave face, and he was proud of himself for that. It was bad enough most of his class thought of him as a crybaby. He didn't want his buddy to think so, too.

Miles squinted. "I don't know. Maybe you should have your mom look at that."

"No! She'll spray it with that stuff!"

He didn't know what to call it, at the time--antiseptic spray--but he knew to hate it when his mom came at him with it, since it not only stung, but also smelled nasty.

That was a feeling he could very much identify with. "Sometimes, my dad uses a cream when I get a cut. It doesn't hurt."

"Oh..."

He frowned in thought for just a moment, then said, seriously, "Your dad is smarter than my mom."

"My dad is smarter than a lot of people," Miles boasted.

[takethat]

"Yeah..." Phoenix nodded in agreement, because he had already learned that in conversations about whose parents were best, Miles always managed to win. "But! Maybe my mom will get some of that stuff if I tell her about it."

"Yeah..."

At least Phoenix appeared to be in better spirits. Momentarily forgetting the abrasion on his friend's hand, he blinked at him expectantly, seemingly entranced by the prospect of a possible treat. He'd almost ask, 'Did you bring it?' were it not for the fact that even he realized that it was a little too soon.

Phoenix, on the other hand, didn't realize what it was Miles wanted from him. He tilted his head a little to the side and smiled, confused. "What's the matter?" he asked.

In those times, young Miles was more apt to wear his heart on his sleeve, so when he saw that Phoenix seemed to have forgotten his request to smuggle in some of his favourite candy that was all the rage at school back in the day, his shoulders sunk. His father forbade them due to the usage of artificial sweeteners, but at that age, Miles really didn't seem to care. Neither did he seem to care or notice at the time that the candy had a very odd name.

Well, one could only feign ignorance. He bit his knuckles.

"Uh...nothing..."

"No, something's wrong! What is it?"

Phoenix, not unlike his older self, couldn't stand the sight of his dear friend being upset about something, particularly when it seemed like it might be Phoenix's fault. He wracked his brain for what might be the source of the trouble, and then suddenly, it hit him--"Oh! Oh no, I bet I fell on it..."

He leapt to his feet, then, and fished around in his back pockets until he produced the candy bar in question. It was clearly broken, but still safely within its wrapper, and he held it out in his non-bloodied hand with a sheepish grin.

Upon seeing the bar, his eyes promptly widened with excitement. His eyes flickered between Phoenix and the chocolate, as if to ask, 'Is it okay? I can take it? Really?'

"Go ahead!" Phoenix grinned brightly. "I won't tell Mr. Gregory." And just in case Miles decided to back out, Phoenix grabbed his hand (trying carefully to avoid getting blood on his friend) and pressed the candy bar firmly into it.

"My mom won't let me eat them either, so I bought it with my own allowance and everything. You better eat it!"

"You did?" Miles started to feel just a bit guilty for harassing his friend to do the dirty work since he could have easily done the same. "Why won't your mum let you eat it?"

"Cause it's not kosher," Phoenix sighed over-dramatically, complete with a roll of his eyes. "None of the good stuff ever is! And my mom would find out if I snuck it..."

Still, he eyed the candy with the newfound realization that he could, in fact, sneak it just like Miles did, and the wheels in his mind began to turn, formulating plans to do just that in the future.

Well...whatever the Hell 'Kosher' was, anyway. Miles was only vaguely curious at the time. He'd ask his dad later...you know, after he finished unwrapping the chocolate.

He fished out a broken piece and offered it to Phoenix.

Oh he wanted to take the offered piece and gobble it right up--it smelled really good even after being smushed--but that allowance money had been spent for someone else, not himself, and Phoenix shook his head.

"That's your candy."

"At least have a little piece..."

[takethat]

"Well... okay!"

He took the piece and broke it in two, handing Miles back half of it.

Miles stuck the broken piece of the broken piece into his mouth and wrapped up the rest of the chocolate, stuffing the bar into his pocket.

Phoenix pouted, but swallowed the chocolate almost without chewing first. "You want me to bring you another one tomorrow?"
