[Once Raine had reminded Zelos of the existence of teleporters in the basement (and of the shortwave radios she listened to Mark's broadcasts with every week), it had been a fairly simple matter to fiddle with them until she had a basic recording of greetings in a few languages - the Paradisan "universal" language, Aselian common and angelic, and even in Earth English and Latin, though she was unsure of her pronunciation in those languages, having learned them primarily from books. The message was simple. If you receive this message, please respond. I would like to speak to someone.

All she needed now was to have Zelos add in whatever musical theme he had acquired and test it out. When she was ready to leave, she sent him a quick message over the journal and waited in the basement for his arrival.]

[It had been a long week for Zelos, catching up with everything that had transpired during his absence. Half of it still didn't make sense to him and he wasn't sure it would ever make sense to him. By the end, he was more than happy to spend an afternoon doing purely research stuff if it meant getting out of another long talk with a person]

[He had obtained the song, some Earth song that Mark insisted was the only one right for this task. He didn't understand that what so ever, but he was willing to go with it. If it was a popular Earth song, then there was a good chance that someone would recognize it considering the ratio of Earth people here]

[But song piece in hand, he heads down to the basement when he receives the filter. Sure has been awhile since he's been down here]

Professor?

Over here, Zelos.

[She's standing over down one of the hallways next to what should actually look pretty familiar to him; these teleporters were built according to Yuan's designs when he'd led the Peace Patrol, so they were controls Raine was familiar with.]

Now, I'm thinking we'll want to go to the western outpost, since Aradia rebuilt it recently. Unless you had another preference?

[He'll follow her voice, giving a lazy wave when he comes into the area] Yo.

[And hey that DOES look familiar. Huh. Though he'll not comment on it]

Sounds find by me.

Excellent. Just a moment.

[She'll punch in the coordinates and, sure enough, it works just like a regular Aselian teleporter and they're right near the border within moments after stepping on it.]

There. It's just a few feet over that way. Shall we add in the music part first?

[Wow hey nostalgia trip! He glances around the area, since it's a bit weird being suddenly out in the outposts after not using teleporters for well over a year]

Might as well, it'll get their attention and not miss the message.

Excellent. I believe once we've added both parts, I can program it to play both, then leave a short amount of time to receive, rather than broadcast. How long do you think I ought to set the interval for? Half an hour, perhaps?

[That should give whoever can hear it a good amount of time to respond, and then the message would be broadcast 48 times a day.]

[He considers, then nods]

Should be frequent enough, yeah.

[She nods and takes the song from him, fiddling with the radio to make it work the way she wants to. Raine always has had a talent for machines, especially considering she's spent most of her life in Sylvarant. Still, all that reading she does is worth something, and anyone who thinks she hasn't been looking at all kinds of technological diagrams while she's been here is deluding themselves.]

Now, I do believe these types of radio have a fairly small broadcasting power on their own, but they should be able to receive many kinds of signals. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the typical Monday night show can't be heard by anyone on this continent who knows the right frequency to tune to.

[And Zelos just watches her do it because sure he's not inept with technology, but he sure is lazy. Please don't rig it to explode on purpose Raine]

[He snorts] I bet Mark would be over the moon if he found out he had Dead Zone listeners.

What's the range on this one?

You know, I'm not entirely certain. It depends on exactly how strong these crystals are, and the sensitivity of the receiving equipment. I know at the very least, Mark's broadcasts can be heard at the edge of town with this equipment. Boosting the signal would be a simple matter of adding a few more crystals into the circuit, if we can find them.

[It was kind of a shame that of the more than a hundred crystals Goldfleck had brought, Raine could only account for several dozen, and very few people seemed to have more than one.]

Perhaps Flora could help with that. Why, we could even gift her with a radio of her own to listen in, if she'd be willing to.

Yeah...where did you guys get those crystals anyway?

[Zelos is completely without any, seeing as well he came long after that came about and tends to avoid messing with powered crystals for SOME reason ~~what a loseeeer~~]

Flora? That lady's still around?

As far as we know, yes. She's the one that gave us the crystals - her assistant, Goldfleck the walking cat, brought them as Christmas presents one year - a crystal for every resident. They're very useful for powering small devices out here, such as cameras. [Because she definitely has some digital images of the places she's visited now.]

Shall we cross the border and test it out?

Huh...that's handy. Maybe we should pay her a visit sometime, see if she can give any insight on all this new information.

[he'll salute] When you're ready, my cool beauty!

We should. That large crystal out in the gardens teleports directly to Mineas Well, so it would be easy.

[She'll doublecheck all the connections, walk across the unmarked border, and hit the PLAY button. Sure enough, her recorded messages play back perfectly, then the song begins.]

It shows it's transmitting normally. Excellent.

[Raine looks at Zelos thoughtfully.]

I suppose we should have brought a second radio to test if it can receive well enough.

[He meanwhile was still adjusting to the temporary power and sense loss, when he hears Raine. Aw jeeez...]

Should I go back and get one?

Hmm. I can get one as well, I suppose, if you'd rather stay here?

[Let's see do work and do the fun of rapid power flicker or let someone else do the work]

If you don't mind...!

Of course not. I'll be right back.

[Brb in about ten minutes as she finds another radio and then teleports back.]

[he all the while has made himself comfortable sitting on a large rock, taking the time to adjust to the Dead Zone. He grins when she comes back]

Found one?

I have. [She'll fiddle with it for a moment until the blank hum of static plays.]

Go ahead and begin the recording again with that green button.

[he nods and does as instructed, waiting to see what happens]

[Looks like the wiring was done correctly, because it plays back perfectly on the second radio.]

Excellent! Oh, I can hardly wait to try this out on a real expedition.

[He laughs and pumps his fist in the air when he hears the sound]

Aha, the ingenious professor does it again!

Too bad we'll have to wait for spring. [STUPID WINTER]

Well, that will give us time to plan, pack, and choose a destination. But I must say I'm pleased with this as well.

[And she looks it!]

Thank you for your assistance, Zelos. We'll call this experiment a success.

Yeah yeah, I guess it's good.

[Winter still sucks though]

[Yes, well, he has his reasons for thinking that. Raine switches the radios off for the moment.]

[He'll nod] Sure, sure. It's kinda cold out here.
