[ Matilda Wormwood had a doll that didn't belong to her.

She saved it, mind you. Rescued it to bring it back to Miss Honey but then something happened and before she knew it, a castle.

A castle! The kind that Matilda was certain she read of before but couldn't remember where. Just this made a frown make its way to her face, settling there; she never forgot a book before and she was certain she had read of a castle once.

In the time that would have taken a normal grown person to panic, Matilda clutched the doll that wasn't hers and thought of an adventure. That against all odds, she had somehow walked into one of the wonderful worlds she has read about in her books. A world where everything is beautiful and the sky is always blue and where children can play and run and read and not fear being thrown into the Chokey for hours.

She took one step forward and then another before leaning against one of the pillars, watching the world around her with a small, awe-struck smile. A child who somehow found herself in a brand new story.

After a few minutes she realized that adventure or not, Miss Honey would likely worry for her and that Lissy-Doll should be brought back to her. She also realized she as much as the castle was vast and beautiful, she was alone. Looking at the people who wandered about, she couldn't recognize a single one.

Riding up and tidying her skirt she began to walk around, peeking up at people, uncertainty written on her face. She didn't even know what questions should she ask first. Gathering up her courage she decided to begin with a very polite: ]

Excuse me - which way would take me back to where I came from, please?

I'm Matilda, it's nice to meet you.

[ she offers a hand, smiling. She looked at him as if he was a wonder, mainly because to her, he was. A talking rabbit was something out of a tale and Matilda was beginning to accept some things only exist in storybooks ]

There are gardens? Can anyone sit there?

[He smiles, taking her hand in one of his big old bunny paws and shaking it] It's a right pleasure.

And dead set, they're not the warmest places with all the snow right now, but anyone can go there.

[revolter]

Maybe when it'll get warmer. Before I went to school, I used to read in the garden next my house. It was wonderful.

[ a smile, perhaps a bit shy. ]

[Aww, Matilda, that gets a smile in return]

There's a library here, too, if you like books. One of the biggest I've ever seen.

[revolter]

I love to read. Is it really big? I think I'd like to spend time there. Are we allowed to take books out? They let us do that at the library near my home.

[thatrabbitsdynamite]

About three floors big. And you can take books for as long as you need. [Aww, Matilda, you get a smile] Nice to see a kid so keen on books.

[revolter]

Books are wonderful, they help me imagine things. Like adventures and the beach, I never really seen it before. Not...really, just pictures.

[thatrabbitsdynamite]

An imagination is the most powerful thing an ankle biter can have. [His existence depends on it, after all]

[That makes him smile] We have a magic beach here, it's in a room in the castle. It's not the same, I know, but still. It's a beach.

[revolter]

A beach inside a room?

[ that is somehow more exciting than an actual one. A beach made of magic ]

What's an ankle biter?

And on other days, that same room is full of snow. This castle pulls out all the stops.

[He chuckles] It means a kid.

[revolter]

Do kids bite ankles where you're from? I don't think they do that in my world.

[thatrabbitsdynamite]

Not really, but they're short enough that they could do it if they wanted to.

[revolter]

[ She giggles at that, mainly since: ]

You are bigger than a normal rabbit.

[thatrabbitsdynamite]

That's because I'm a pooka. We just look like rabbits.

[revolter]

What is a pooka? What do you really look like? Why did you choose a rabbit?

[thatrabbitsdynamite]

We really look like rabbits, I didn't chose it. And a pooka...

Well, we used to guard the universe, time, and all that. Keep watch over it.

[revolter]

Guard the universe?

[ that sounds important, a bit too important for someone like this to be here. ]

Are you guarding the castle now?

[thatrabbitsdynamite]

I've watched over just Earth for a while now.

But yeah, for now, I guess the castle, and the children in the castle, are what I need to protect.

[revolter]

So you're protecting me too!

[ she smiles. ]

Thank you. What do you protect us from?

[thatrabbitsdynamite]

Of course. [To the death, if necessary]

Anything at all that tries to cause you harm.

[revolter]

And who protects you?

[ concern washes over her face. If there is danger, she'd like to have someone to keep her safe. But in her kindness, she'd like for him to be safe too. ]

[thatrabbitsdynamite]

We usually protect each other.

[There were the kids in Burges, of course, who stood together to protect the failing Guardians. But he didn't really want to encourage that sort of behaviour. Not in a place as dangerous as this]

[revolter]

Are there more of you here?

[thatrabbitsdynamite]

Not right now...no.

[He's starting to worry about that really, as much as he enjoys his solitude, he hasn't been disconnected from the other Guardians for this long before]
