[ she should have asked if she was allowed to draw on the pavement near the garden. But Matilda had figured that if she wasn't, she'll wash the chalk away.

It was a good practice for her power more than just a game. She knew this was something many kids usually played together but having grown up the way she did, she didn't mind playing alone.

To those who might pass her she might seem like a true wonder. A small child in a blue dress making a stone rise into the air before it is elegantly placed down on a numbered square for her to hop on the other numbered blocks to get it back. After she retrieves it, she hops back only to lay it on the ground and make it float up and onto one of the chalk squares again.

[Watches attentively, then nods.] Okay, that looks straightforward enough. Is it possible to win, or is it just for fun?

If you lose your balance and fall out of the lines, you're out. But mostly it's for fun.

Alright, let me give it a try.

[she has the rock fly back to her hand, then tosses it onto the hopscotch pattern and goes hopping after it. she has to pause briefly to pick it up, but otherwise she manages without screwing up too bad.]

[ She nods her approval, even goes and claps her hands. ]

That was a good round. Now hop back here.

[She does! This is the easy part. When she completes that, she hands Matilda back the stone.]

[ she lifts a fingers, makes the stone fly to a square and carefully hops forward to get it back. ]

I wonder how many times you have to do this until you fall.

I don't know. It doesn't look like it gets harder each time or anything.
