[ she should have asked if she was allowed to draw on the pavement near the garden. But Matilda had figured that if she wasn't, she'll wash the chalk away.

It was a good practice for her power more than just a game. She knew this was something many kids usually played together but having grown up the way she did, she didn't mind playing alone.

To those who might pass her she might seem like a true wonder. A small child in a blue dress making a stone rise into the air before it is elegantly placed down on a numbered square for her to hop on the other numbered blocks to get it back. After she retrieves it, she hops back only to lay it on the ground and make it float up and onto one of the chalk squares again.

She nods, smiling. "We'll be whoever we want to be. Matilda one day, River the next. Some days we might forget who we are but we an help each other. Help be who we were trying to be."

"We can pretend we're on adventures. Like an adventure to find a treasure and there will be dangers but we'll find it in the end and we'll buy a house." If there's something Matilda learned from the story of Miss Honey, is the importance of a house.

"I've been on adventures," she says "Not always fun, not always good. But if we pretend...." I they pretend then there's nothing that an hurt them, right?

River moves, hugging the girl lightly. "We'll be great adventurers."

[revolter]

She is unused to this, to affection in any form so she looks up at her, offers her a smile and wraps her arms around her waist.

"Like the ones in my stories."

"Yes," she agrees with a smile. "Great, wonderful adventurers. We'll turn the world upside down."
