A Happy Be-Lated Birthday Party (Does That Make It an Unbirthday?)

Who: Ashura (wishmadeinfire ) , Dextera (twisted_baroque ), and Felix (lord_wizard )
What: Ashura learned with was Dextera's birthday and he wanted to help the boy celebrate and see that birthdays are happy things!
When: Today
Where: Ashura and Felix's room
Warnings: none

Ashura checked that everything was in place - a table set  out with delicious food (roasted duck, potatoes, seasoned vegetables) and for three, that there was wine, juice, and water available according to diner's preference, and the piece de resistance - a birthday cake set in the middle surrounded by a series of small gifts with the words 'Happy Birthday Dextera' written on its buttercream surface.

Now, all that was needed to be done was await the presence of the birthday boy himself.

Ashura beamed at Dextera, clearly proud of himself and their little party.

"I hope you like everything," he said to him, motioning him to the table to come and take a seat.

He blinked a few times before taking a seat. The mute couldn't really help but look curious this time since this was something he only had bits and peices of an idea instead of a whole (if somewhat broken) idea. But he knew that these two people were good at explaining what he didn't understand so he wasn't too worried about not understanding it.

Dextera pulled out his journal and taped the page once before writing.

"I think it looks nice. Thank you."

"You're very welcome," he said, then reached out to pull a chair away from the table. "Please...sit."

Ashura began carving the duck and splitting it up between them. He then put on the vegetables and set the plates around, taking a seat and smiling gently at Dextera.

"So, happy birthday, Dextera."

Dextera takes a seat himself and watched Ashura split up the food. He smiled a litte bit, happy at the idea that they were taking time out of their lives to do this for him.

"Yes. Happy birthday to me."

And that made him happy as well, though for a different reason.

Felix wordlessly poured himself some wine and slid into a nearby seat.

"Twenty-one is a good age. It's a good time to expand your horizons...learn more about the world," he said, knowing that would please the boy. And he he, of course, that at that age Dextera was technically a man, but he couldn't bring himself to think the words in relation to him.

Ashura nodded, raising his glass.

"A toast then, to Dextera!" he beamed. "May you have many more happy years ahead, and may these be one of the best."

There was a moment where Dextera didn't do anything. The idea of having more time to live was something he didn't think about back home. But here, with people who didn't hate him for what he did, the mute thought about it more and more often.

But he put those thoughts aside for the moment and smiled a bit brighter. This was supposed to be a happy sort of thing which meant he was supposed to be happy as well, right?

"I hope I live a long time too." Dextera really did wish this. An idea that made his heart warm.

Felix felt a painful tug on his heart at those words. He'd seen what Dextera had been through back home. He hoped the same thing, despite the overwhelming evidence to the contrary. It some sense it made him feel ever closer to the boy in the sense that all three of them were doomed in some respect, though it was exactly a cheerful thought.

He smiled, a little sadly, and handed Dextera a glass of juice, holding up his own glass to show him what to do.

"To Dextera."

"To Dextera," Ashura repeated, clinking their glasses in the center and beaming at the young man.

"The cake is marbled, so I hope you like it. I couldn't decide if you would like chocolate or vanilla better, so I chose both," he laughed.

"I don't think I've had both at the same time before." Which meant this was another new thing. The thought that he really should start looking at his cooking books again ran through his mind for a moment before it latched onto something else.

"Can I ask why it's called 'marbled'?"

Felix smiled and stabbed a fork into the food without much preamble.

"Marble is a type of stone. It can have various appearances, but it usually looks like two or more colors swirled together," he said, then swished the juicy piece of duck around in his potatoes, creating a similar effect, "...like that."

Ashura laughed, but kindly.

"Yes, something like that. Think of two colors of paint being swirled together, but not fully mixed. That is what it looks like it. It is sort of a way to cheat and get both flavors at once," he grinned at Dextera, munching happily on his duck, taking a slice of orange and squeezing the juice from the wedge onto the skin for added flavor.
