The doors we open and close each day

Who: Felix Harrowgate, Geoffrey Chaucer, Miles Edgeworth & Vanyel Ashkevron
What: A dinner party and an attempt at matchmaking
When: Tonight
Where: Chimera HQ
Rating: PG-13, most likely

Felix idly wondered if life in Paradisa was beginning to be so utterly boring, that he'd found the time and motivation for this sort of thing. It wasn't entirely charity on his part, that was for certain. He liked both Miles and Vanyel, but honestly both of them needed to loosen up and since he was rather unavailable in that regard, he might as well shove them together and hope they'd discover an outlet to their mutual problems.

In the very least, it might be entertaining.

Of course, having a get together without Ashura was unusual, but his lover's sentimentality wasn't exactly what he needed in this situation. This was more...secondary seduction. Thus asking Geoffrey to assist.

Too bad he couldn't drug them, though some strong wine wasn't out of the question.

He'd had a table placed in the lobby of Chimera headquarters and laid it out with their meal. It was a little more impersonal than his own quarters, but ensured it wouldn't look amiss when he left for the evening, hopefully leaving Vanyel and Miles alone.

What happened then was out of his hands. Right now, he only had to wait.

Criminal Law? Very interesting, is it not, Vanyel?

[Oh shit that was probably too much.]

[Vanyel had been quietly listening, as he had learned to do in his years, and quickly swallowed the sip of wine he had been working with, savoring the taste.]

Yes, very. I know it takes quite a lot to memorize and understand laws. I am required to do so for quite a few myself. But I take it your job entails a bit more than solving the problems of farmers out in the country, Miles.

[Where to start?]

Our... judicial system is an odd microcosm in of itself, in which the accused is given a trial that does not exceed three days until they are assumed guilty if not proven otherwise. Prosecutors are given the unfair -well, in my opinion - advantages of presiding over investigations, and statistically, 99% of accused are convicted of the crime. Needless to say, I can very much guarantee that many of the accused are actually innocent, and prosecutors with years of maintaining perfect records are not uncommon.

...It would be a great deal more difficult to attempt to reform a system one is not a part of. Wouldn't you agree?

To a degree. Revolutions have a history of working out in the people's favor rather than those that run the system.

While that is true, it is usually with great difficulty. Obviously, those with power tend to be reluctant to renounce it in favour of the plebeian majority.

[Geoff really could be paying attention. But instead, he's staring off into space, obviously thinking about something else.]

What are your thoughts, Geoff? Certainly your world has some experience with revolutions and such.

[personal profile] thetrudger 2012-05-19 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
[Oh shit whoops. He jumps a little at that and looks between the men for a few seconds.]

Er... revolutions. Yes. Plenty of those.

[He chuckles a bit.]

...What's on your mind, Geoff?

[He runs a hand through his hair.]

Nothing I feel like sharing. Do not let me sabotage the conversation, do continue.

[Don't kill him, Felix. He didn't mean to ruin the conversation.]

[Edgeworth translates that as, 'Something is not all right,' and thinks it best to not push the issue.]

...Very well, then.

...In any case, if our judicial system were to be revolutionized, I do believe that I know the very person capable of doing so single-handedly, being very much one of 'the people,' himself.

[Not exactly sure how to interpret that look, he pauses for a second or two before responding.]

...Yes. Actually, Geoff here knows him very well.

...In any case, if judicial reform were to have a face, I would believe it to be his. I'd be far removed given that for one, I am a prosecutor, and two, my reputation is far too tarnished.
