Although it was something of a last minute production, South was eager for the chance to rub in York's age a little. She'd felt at such a disadvantage being the baby of her little group, and once the opportunity presented itself for a little mischief she couldn't ignore it.

It had taken some organization and a call out to York's friends, but people who knew him (and even some who didn't) were willing to pitch in and help out.

Thus, South had put up a bunch of decorations, in addition to whatever some of the others brought in. She even had a special hat for the party Boy. Five had someone making a cake, Aradia was helping put up decorations, Reno was in charge of alcohol ... South was quite pleased with herself.

[And most of the time, Carolina's hanging back and letting the party go on around. Hey it's not her birthday; she doesn't have to be entertaining guests.]

[Technically it's not South's birthday either, but she is the host so she's ... sort of mingling. Drink in hand, she makes her way over to Carolina after a bit.]

Color me a little surprised you actually showed up.

[She looks ... pleased, though.]

[Carolina's not exactly sure how to respond to that, or the fact that South looks, well, happy. Nonetheless, she's not the type to hold out where compliments are due.]

Good job here, South.

[South gives a little chuckle and stares at her feet for a moment, before glancing over the crowd.]

Yeah, well. I had some help.

[She never actually thought she'd hear those words from Carolina, and for a moment she's not sure what to do with them. It does, however, finalize something that had been on her mind.]

So, I've been thinking. About, what you said. [Surreptitious little glance at Carolina. Maybe now wasn't quite the time or place, but she couldn't think of a better moment.]

[Carolina tries to keep from immediately zoning in on the mention of things they'd discussed, aka the team. She nods slowly and turns her gaze up toward South as casually as she can manage.]

And?

[Okay, so patience isn't always her forte.]

[Well her patience is going to have to learn to wait a couple moments, because South doesn't answer right away. It's still a risk, to her, but with Haymitch going home and North still absent she had to admit, if even to herself, she needed the support. Seeing her former team here like this just enhanced that idea.]

[Trying to act casual she gives a little half-shrug.] I'd like that. I mean, to be back.

[Carolina tries to hide the small smile that lifts the corners of her lips just slightly. It's a risk to the team, too, to invite South back, but they would all work to handle everyone's risks, right? That's what it meant to be on a team, after all.]

Good to hear. I can start talking to the others about--- [And remembering she's at a party.] after the party. We'll work it out.

Yeah, don't -- it's not like, urgent, or anything. [GOD suddenly awkward. She takes a deep drink from her glass, thankful for the distraction.]

[Carolina nods, feeling some of the awkward tension herself but doing her best to ignore it.]

Got it. [A moment's pause, before,] Let me know.

Yeah, I'll do that.

So ... York didn't give you any trouble coming down here, did he? [South, wat. She's mentally facepalming as soon as she says it. Why was talking to Carolina always so hard?]

[Shaking her head.] He usually doesn't. Helped that he didn't know you'd be calling him an old man for a couple hours.

Hey, helps me get back some dignity. It's not easy being the timeline baby. [Considering she was still under the impression Carolina came in from after her.]

[Carolina raises her eyebrows at South for a moment. Well, maybe today is not the time to break the news that South isn't the earliest one here right now.]

Being further along isn't as great as you think it is.

Yeah well being early on isn't some great picnic either. It's like everyone else knows the deep dark secrets and I'm still out of the loop. Explain all you like, it's not like actually being there. [She gives a little shrug.]

Not that, you know, I want to experience it, [Certainly not after what Carolina told her,] It's just frustrating at times.

[Well, Carolina can certainly identify with that. She didn't like being kept in the dark either and it had frustrated the hell out of her when York simply wouldn't tell her.]

We're still working on a way to try and change what happens.

You think you'll find a way? [She crosses her arms and just resists holding herself. She was still dealing with the fallout from Carolina's news.]

[She probably would be for a while.]

[Carolina nods with certainty, despite not exactly feeling too confident herself.]

It'll happen, South.

[i_got_this]

[She hefts a heavy sigh,] I hope so.

[youfallback]

[Carolina nods one more time.] I'm gonna take a look around and see who's here.

[South's thankful for the change of topic.] Yeah, it got a nice little turn out.

Either York's got a bunch of friends or you do, South. [Which she smiles a little about. In the larger sense, it means that South is at least making the effort to branch out.]

[South shrugs.] Hey, some people don't know either of us. Anyone will come when they hear 'party' and 'free booze'.

[But she is pleasantly surprised by the people she knows showing up. Is this what it's like having friends]

[Carolina nods slightly.] I still recognize most of the faces here.

[i_got_this]

[South can't help a little scoff.] 'Course you do.

[Carolina probably made it a point to meet everyone in the castle when she first got here, South wonders.]

[Well, not quite everyone, but she'd made it a point to talk to as many as people as possible while recruiting for the Floor Captains.]
