Who: You and yours and Miss Mockingjay.
What: Katniss is mapping the hostile territory ... which means everything and everywhere.
When: Early morning, mid-day, early afternoon, before the Hunting.
Where: EVERYwhere.
Rating: PG-13 - because Katniss is, well, Katniss. Thread jack at will!



You may have seen her before - the tall, pale girl with the dark hair and intense grey eyes - but you may not have seen her like this. Light burn scars touch her neck, her braided hair shorter than before, and she carries a soldier's weary alertness. She's doing her reconnaissance today, so you might have seen her walking the castle, looking in every nook and available cranny, as well as fully walking the grounds.

You might see her out in the forest, her footsteps so soft you will not sense her coming until she's right behind you. You might see her at the springs, the shooting range, the town .... suffice to say that today is a good day to finally bump into Katniss Everdeen.

She nodded her head, grey eyes bright, as she reached into her pocket and pulled out a length of string. She tied the creatures legs together with neat, studied motions, before looking around.

"You see a big branch?"

[squirrelhunter]

"Yeah. Lemme grab it." He's going to go scale up the tree and set to breaking the branch, pulling his knife and starting to saw to weaken it.

Memories flooded back - being high above the ground of the Arena. Sawing through the branch with the tracker jack hive, while Rue watched from a few trees away. She swallowed, hard, rubbing a hand over her face briefly as she muttered her mantra under her breath once or twice.

[squirrelhunter]

"I'd not stand there." Daryl calls down as he starts kicking the branch.

She stepped back, swiftly, almost seeing the tracker jack nest falling towards her head, like it fell towards Glimmer, Clove, Cato and Marvel...

She closed her eyes, and repeated her mantra one more time, for luck, while she waited for the branch to fall.

[squirrelhunter]

A few more thuds, and, with a loud CRACK! The branch falls to the ground, Daryl moving to climb back down the tree.

"That big enough?"

"Perfect."

She slipped out her own knife, and started stripping the smaller branches from the branch, so they could slide the deer on their more easily. Only the tense set of her jaw showed that she was still struggling with reality overlapped by memory.

[squirrelhunter]

Daryl helps out with that, he can't help but notice the tension, however...

After a few minutes, he eventually speaks up. "You okay?"

She pressed her lips together, briefly, at his question. Then she shook her head a little bit - either in denial or 'I don't want to talk about it'.

"It's nothing. Just combat fatigue."

At least, that's what her doctor had called it.

"We ain't fightin' none."

He has a point. How can it be combat fatigue if there's no combat?

"No ... but I was. Not long ago."

She rubbed her face, standing up straight.

[squirrelhunter]

"In a war?"
