[It seemed like the logical next step, even without Charming to teach him. Go to the stables, learn about the horses, maybe learn how to ride one. He didn't suss through all the steps, but the first one is the most important, right?

Now, though, standing on tip-toe in a front of a stall with his hand outstretched and a horse ignoring him, he realizes it probably would have been good to have a better plan.]

And so it is. [She smiles and reaches out to pet the horse.] Trust between horse and rider is as important as anything you might be taught.

What's the best way to do it? [He turns to peer into the horse's face.] If I wanted to. Just talk to them?

Speak to them. Feed them. Care for them; it will come in time.

Oh, well. [He smiles wide while the horse chomps.] I've got that down already.

So you do. [And her smile widens in turn.] Few here seem to have an interest in riding. I am glad to see that the desire has not died out entirely among the young.

I don't really have a chance at home. My mom doesn't think it's important.

I figured, here's a good place to start.

It is difficult for me to imagine. Where I am from it is rather an essential part of a young man's education- or a young lady's, for that matter.

I wish they'd teach me stuff like this at school. I wouldn't mind going then.

[A little laugh] Is your schooling so dreadful?

It's not so bad. The stuff they teach, anyway. [The other kids, the loneliness, that was not as fun.] But it's not fun or helpful, and there's a ton of other important stuff that nobody but me is going to do.

You may be surprised what will prove useful in the fullness of time.

[He squints up at her, skeptically.]

Even knowing what different kinds of clouds there are?

Would it not be useful to know which clouds will bring rain? [This is a valid skill in Middle Earth. Not everyone has the weather channel.]

[That gets a sheepish smile. As cool as he thinks they are, worlds without wifi must suck at least a little.]

Ah, yes. I have had the term explained to me, but I fear I understand very little of it still.

It makes everything a lot easier. I could check the weather for a week from now if I wanted to.
