[In the lobby tonight, there is a small girl who looks like she belongs in a castle this grand. Her blue dress matches the decoration style better than most residents' clothing, her long skirts and stay intricate and befitting a higher class daughter.

This girl, however, looks extremely confused, cautiously wandering through the grand entrance and seeming for all the world like she has no idea what's going on.

Because she doesn't.

Last she recalls, she was on a ship, heading home, and this place is like nowhere on The Jackdaw at all, not that she's seen.

She takes a cursory pass around the lobby, then takes a seat on a sofa and clutches her doll to her chest.]

It'll be all right, Dolly. Father is with us now, this must just be part of the adventure.

Sort of. I am from Italy, we have different jobs there.

[As for the dolphins...}

The whales I saw were gray, perhaps the size of a grown man, and they have white stripes and long skinny noses. Perhaps baby whales lose their noses as they grow larger.

[toyboat]

[She laughs, rests her hands on her knees.]

No, those are dolphins! Whales are massive, so huge you can't comprehend it! That's what I learned about them. And they cry out, even when they're happy.

What's it like in Italy? I've only been to Bristol, where I'm from, and then I sailed to meet Father in the West Indies.

[assassino]

A dolphin! [That probably sounds atrocious under his accent.] I see, I see. I do not take ships much, I am afraid, just ferries and the odd gondola.

[But no matter.]

That is a long journey for someone who has never travelled! Italy is different from place to place, however –– I grew up in Florence, where art and knowledge is prized above all else. In Venice they prefer pleasure and festivals, and in Forlì all the girls of your age are interested in make-up because the Countess prizes it.

It was very long, but it was good. I never saw any pirates though, and Father says probably I won't. That's sad, but at least there's the whales. And maybe dolphins too!

If you care for art and knowledge, then why chase criminals? Are you bad at painting?

[assassino]

You are fortunate you did not see pirates! As enjoyable as the stories are, they are not such pleasant fellows in real life. [Ezio has met some unsavory sailors, at least. He chuckles and reaches to make a gesture like something smells bad.] They stink terribly!

And yes, I confess to be a terrible painter. I am more of an athlete than an artist.

[toyboat]

Oh, but I want to see them, I know my father could fight them off! They seem so exciting.

[Enthralled, Jenny moves closer to him, on her hands and knees since she's already on the floor.]

Do you play cricket? Oh, or are you a boxer? I've heard that boxers are nearly as rough as pirates, that they both have faces covered in scars and their noses are crooked from being broken.

[assassino]

[He laughs, electing to just sit instead of crouch. Ezio Auditore, grown-ass man, he who lounges on the floor with children and dogs, he who skips around on rooftops and even naps up there when it isn't too hot.]

I suppose I could be likened to a boxer. Do you think this scar is proof enough?

[He gestures at the scar on his lip.]

And I imagine my nose is so big only because I have been struck too many times.

[Jenny stops right in front of him, obviously no longer cautious due to her enthusiasm.]

Hmm, how did you get it? Was your opponent cheating, was he wearing those knuckle things? Did you lose the fight? How many times have you broken your nose? It's not so crooked, only big, really...

[Nine year olds...]

He just got in a lucky strike. Everyone learns to fight, and everyone gets struck now and again, even the best of fighters.

[toyboat]

I suppose that's true, but it is quite a big scar to have come from only someone's fist. I'm Jenny, what's your name?

[assassino]

I am Ezio! Pleased to meet you, Jenny.

[He tips his head in a little bow. Jenny, huh? He's heard that name before.]

And this scar came from a rock. Funny, hmm?

[toyboat]

[She giggles, and mimics him, unable to curtsey because she's on the ground.] Ezio. That's a kind of name I've never heard before, does it mean something?

He was holding a rock? That's not nice, even in prizefighting! It's cheating, I think.

[assassino]

I quite agree! He was an idiot boy, though, as was I –– all boys are idiots at that age.

[He's much more mature these days.]

Ezio is an Italian name. It means "Eagle." What does Jenny mean?

Hmm, well, it's short for Jennifer. I don't know what Jennifer means, really. I never knew why Mother chose my name, maybe it means something and no one ever told me.

Jennifer? Hmm! I think that is like the Italian name Ginevra, like Ginevra de' Benci. It means "fair", I think, but perhaps it means juniper instead. Ginevra, ginepro, they sound alike, hmm?

Oh, they do! Ginevra is a pretty name too, maybe prettier than Jennifer, although I'm not Italian at all, so I couldn't have it.

You could have it if you liked, you know. There is a great Italian explorer named Cristoforo Corombo, and the English call him Christopher Colombus.

I know Christopher Columbus, of course. He discovered the New World and all the Indians! But wouldn't my name still be Jennifer, if it were made English?

[She laughs.] But I'm English! And besides, if I became Ginevra, Father would never find me. He would ask for Jenny, and people wouldn't know to point him to me.

Well, i will still call you Ginevra, or Ginny, or something, because my Italian tongue struggles with your name so.

[He's teasing about that. He can manage.]

Now, on the subject of your father...

[toyboat]

Just don't be cross if I forget to answer!

[Jenny beams at him, nodding.]

I believe your father is here, you know.

[toyboat]

Well, of course he is. If I'm here, then Father must be here as well.

Oh. [A chuckle, a shrug.] Well, if you already know, then there is no need for me to treat it like a surprise, hmm?

Tell me about your father. I do not know much about him.
