[Steve wakes up bright and early to work on the feast for the holiday. Lamb stew, turkey, mashed potatoes, biscuits, and gravy are just some of what he's trying to cook today. He could never have a feast like this at home with the war going on so he indulges while the opportunity is here. Aside from that, the people coming have earned it after the craziness of last month.

The round of colds going around yesterday doesn't discourage him either. Winter is approaching. People are supposed to get sick around this time. He makes chicken soup to show his consideration though. He can always drop it off later if they can't get out of bed. He'll find a way to make the best out of the situation.]

Preparation

[From early morning to late afternoon, you can find Steve working on dinner in the kitchen. He's only coming out to set out whatever he finishes.

Feel free to bring your own food, come talk to him while he works, or help Steve out. He'll protest at first, but ultimately appreciate it.]

[Jo is helping Steve! It is her kitchen, too, so she's probably just in the way a bit.]

When's the last big Thanksgiving you've had?

Let's see... I'd say about seven or eight years ago? It was the last one I got to spend in the orphanage. The people who ran the place always managed to throw together a good dinner for holidays.

Dinner

[valuedstrength]

[Dinner is complete! Steve will have disappeared for twenty minutes after the cooking is finished only to return in his best pants, shoes, and dress shirt. There will be a quick prayer before it's time to eat.

Steve will suggest if anyone wants to say what they're thankful for now would be a good time to share. Feel free to make normal conversation though.]

[Rebekah has some issues navigating through the town proper, as it's still all very new and foreign to her, but she eventually makes her way to what she thinks is Steve's home, and is entering just a little bit on the late side for dinner.]

[Steve had been wondering what became of Rebekah. When he sees her entering, he waves. When she gets close enough, he'll address her.] You made it. I was worried you might have gotten a cold too.

No, I have not. I just got a little off track on my way here.

That makes sense. This place is bigger than you think at first glance.

It is. And the appearance...it is still a lot to get used to.

We could always take a walk around sometime if you like.

I'd like that, thank you.

You're welcome. We'll have to do it when all this blows over.

[She nods.] I am in no hurry.

[Dairine is surprisingly quiet during dinner. Probably because she is privately chatting with Spot, mind to mind, about the virus problem. What terrible table manners. She might not seem very conversational, but if you talk to her, she will respond.

Spot, meanwhile, is resting under Dairine's chair. Because computers don't sit on the dinner table in public.]

After dinner

[valuedstrength]

[You've either stuffed yourself silly or shown some self control. Either way, dinner is over. You can help clean up, grab some dessert, keep talking to everyone at the table, step out to catch some air, etc. This is your downtime. Have some fun!]

[As much as Dairine wants to book it right back to the library, there are things she still needs to address here. Most importantly, dessert. Once Dairine gets herself a slice of pie, she makes her way over towards the host.]

Hey, Steve? I need to talk to you.

[Steve looks up from whatever he's doing.] What is it, Dairine?

[Dairine bites her lip, unsure if this is a bad time to bring this up. But time is of the essence.]

It's about Barton. [Actually it's a whole lot more than just Barton, but she'll work her way up there.]

[valuedstrength]

[Steve's jaw sets. Yesterday's encounter is fresh in his mind.] What about him?

[Yipes. There's an intimidating jaw.]

He's... well, not doing so well lately. In fact, you could almost say he's not like himself at all.

[valuedstrength]

I noticed. [Steve had to put him down after all. He looks none too happy about it.] What's the story behind that?

[Steve assumes that's what she's building toward.]

He was sick earlier yesterday morning with the cough that's been going around. The one that people thought was a cold or flu?

Except it’s not. The disease is a native virus, one with particularly disturbing effects. By the end of the day, the cold symptoms were gone, but everyone who caught it... their personalities had changed. They got bitter, angrier, or just plain weird.

[valuedstrength]

So you're saying everyone who's got a cold is going to turn on us or get weird? [A beat.] Have the doctors chimed in about this?

[wizard_redfive]

Basically. [That question triggers a new wave of panic. She rubs her arm nervously.] Not yet. The only medical personnel I've heard from so far was infected, but that was just Ino.

[valuedstrength]

We'll figure something out. [Always the optimist.] Are you okay? [He doesn't miss the gesture.]

Already working on it. [Working overtime, in fact, which explains a good chunk of her stress.]

Oh yeah. Never been better. Just see how okay I am. [Sarcasm = best line of defense.]

[valuedstrength]

[He frowns.] You don't have to take this all on yourself. We're all in this together.

Who said I was doing this by myself? I have a group of volunteers looking for information as we speak.

That's not what I meant.

Then what is it?

You seem really stressed when you shouldn't be. As long as we've got each other's backs everything is going to be okay.

[wizard_redfive]

I'm sorry - I shouldn't be stressed when we're facing a mystery disease with no known cure?

[She probably shouldn't be so snappish. But even if she's not alone in this... even if things turn out alright, it's still nerve-racking.]

[valuedstrength]

[Steve shakes his head.] Getting yourself worked up isn't going to change that.

No. [She concedes, her irritation dissipating a little.] I just can't stand it -- being idle when there's a crisis.

[valuedstrength]

Good thing you're not being idle then. [He smiles to try to reassure her.] You've got the opposite problem in fact.

[wizard_redfive]

Doesn't feel that way. [Dairine mutters darkly. She has never dealt well with waiting, whether it was for test results or spring break. This was yet another form of waiting, the busy work before the shoe finally dropped. But this could have far more negative consequences.]

[Pepper is seated on one of the many chairs that have been scattered through the gallery. It seems like it was a good idea to set up the actual dinner in the gallery proper, since there are so many of them and Jo's apartment seemed a bit small. This is very nice though, and Pepper is sipping on a glass of wine.

Tony is planning on prying himself away from the tower at some point. She insists. But for the time being she's just taking a breath and hoping to meet some of Steve's friends.]

[Tony will be in good company. Dairine is sitting off to one side of the gallery, looking just as busy as he probably is. Her biteless-Apple notebook sits on a nearby chair, streaming data while she flips through a large book at a rather fast pace, a look of intense concentration on her face. She glances at the computer screen every once and a while, but otherwise leaves it to its own thing.

Well, it is one of Steve's friends. Come bother her?]

[Faith got there early. Probably too early, but she's never really sure when to show up for these things. She'd been early to Christmas at the Summers' too. This isn't quite like that, but she still feels a bit odd being here so early. Steve seems to be doing okay for cooking and as previously established: Faith can't cook.

So, she's just standing around, drinking something that has alcohol in it, because why not?]

Are you lost? [ Ha. Such a joker this one. Chase is thinking she's connected to Steve. Or that if she's friends with Jo, that she's actually been nice enough to not let Jo know that her boyfriend's kind of a jerk/meanie.

He's smiling though and ready to pour her another drink because lo and behold, he lives here now. ]

Lost? Yeah you're real clever.

[She frowns.] Steve invited me.

Ah. Should I be hiding the valuables? [ Okay, okay. No more meanie jokes. He lifts the bottle of wine up and offers to refill her glass. ]

[She shoots him a look.]

Low blow. [She will take the alcohol being provided to a minor though!]

Hang out with Dairine before dinner

[It’s a miracle Dairine made it to the dinner at all, with the crazy virus going on. She’s hardly left the library at all since making that announcement, outside of helping people evacuate. But she did promise Steve, and as Spot reminded her, crisis or not, she still needs to eat.

Plus, she can protect them from any possible virus carriers while she’s here. Everyone

Still, that doesn’t mean Dairine is gonna stop researching. You can take a girl out of the library, but you can’t take the library out of the girl. She can be found sitting inside the gallery with her laptop out, her head burrowed in a book. She mutters commands to him as she reads.]

Alright, cross-reference the medical files with our Lastlook notes… There must be some other connection.

[ Having just arrived a little over half an hour ago, Dean had taken a walk around the gallery and had gotten bored within minutes. He grabs a beer, takes a seat and notices the little geek/nerd/girl version of Sammy. ]

What have you got there, kid?
