[Martel actually started holding onto Zelos loosely around the waist an hour or so ago, after they went over a hilly patch of ground. They'd been riding for a few hours, she thinks, from the way the sun has been moving. She can't tell, of course. And she can't tell where they are, either. She's never been out this far from the Castle, really. That doesn't mean she's not enjoying, it, though.]

So, have you been to this place before? Wanderer's Yard.

[She tilts her head.] You know, I still don't like it when people call me a 'lady'.

[wilder]

Because you don't feel like you are one?

[heal_theworld]

Well, I'm not. And also, it reminds me of the fact that most people from Aselia call me that because they see me as a goddess.

[wilder]

Heh.

Actually...if we saw you as the Goddess, we'd just call you Goddess Martel. That's the title used back home, The Goddess Martel. Lady Martel would be too small a title for an actual deity.

[Martel raises an eyebrow.] Then why do I have to keep telling Colette to call me just 'Martel' and not 'Lady Martel'?

[wilder]

Because our darling angel finds you..Martel, the half-elf, the person- to be such a great person that it feels wrong to her not show you some sort of respect.

[heal_theworld]

Yes, well, I'm still not worthy of such praise.

[wilder]

Ah, but you are in her eyes.

[heal_theworld]

[Martel sighs.] I wish I wasn't.

[wilder]

Heh.

Unfortunately, that's not how these sort of things work.

Then how do they work, Zelos?

[wilder]

[There's a brief pause before he speaks]

People need to believe in something. Deities, people, ideas, causes - whatever their preference. Everyone needs to have something to believe in, whether or not it's deserving of reverence. Being incapable of believing in anything or anyone...that's an undesirable life.

[heal_theworld]

...[She's quiet too.] I don't think believing in me will end well. All I seem to have managed to do was heal people and get myself killed. perhaps believing in a Goddess that can change the world might be better than a half-elf that can't do anything in the end.

[wilder]

[he snorts]

Yeah, but you never gave up. Even if you weren't successful- that's pretty admirable.

More than the Goddess we know, anyway.

[heal_theworld]

And what do you know about that Goddess? That she was the most wonderful, amazing person ever? Because I assure you, I am neither.

[wilder]

[...he stops the mount. There is a long pause before he speaks]

Hardly. The Goddess I know?

Is an uncaring and vindictive bitch that is too busy mourning someone that died thousands of years ago to even listen to our prayers. She sure didn't listen to a single one of mine, and I was her Chosen.

When I found out that the Goddess wasn't real? The main thing I remember feeling was relief.

And I gotta say, I'm very glad that you're nothing like her.

[She stares at his back for a few moments, not even sure what to say with that.] ...That's the problem with Goddesses. They're so untouchable and so far away that it's impossible for them to help anyone. Any deity, really. They don't care about our petty problems. They just get all caught up in their own affairs, in the big picture. They can't see anything beyond black and white. [Like the elves, like the people who started the war.] I...I think I might have told you this once, when we first met.

[When she wasn't sure about him, but now she knows. She gives him a small, quirky smile.] My brother... I think he might have been wrong. Colette may be like me, but...so are you. Just not in ways he wanted.

[wilder]

[Okay the second part? Completely make his brain short circuit that he can't even reply to the first part. In fact it's a good thing he stopped Scaley in the previous comment otherwise he might have gotten them thrown off from how fast he twists around in his seat to try to get a look at her]

Huh?!

[heal_theworld]

[Sorry, and now you have her laughing.] You heard me!

[He stares at her for a moment like she grew a second head or something or she's yanking his chain. SORRY SPENDING ALL HIS LIFE HEARING WHAT A FAIL CHOSEN HE WAS HAS ITS EFFECTS ]

[Then he goes back to his more calm look]

...Heh. Whatever.

[heal_theworld]

It's true. [She pokes him in the back, right between the shoulder blades so he can't ignore her.] Look at us. We're in the middle of nowhere on a journey we prepared for in ten minutes. And I didn't even blink when you asked. I just said yes. Because I need something to do with my time than just sitting around feeling useless.

And now we're talking about how people need something to believe in, and yet... we don't believe in ourselves.

[He makes a small whine when she pokes him] Heeey!

[wilder]

[But he'll at least listen to her now. He doesn't know how to feel about this. Happy? Annoyed? What? He has no idea, there's too many feelings]

Hm. What a pair we make then.

[heal_theworld]

[She gives him a small shake of her head, and a small smile.] I think that maybe once I did, but...I failed the world. Just because I couldn't protect myself from one man with a sword. I didn't change anything that I wanted to change. The only thing I managed to do was help end the war.
