Who: Martel Yggdrasill and Zelos Wilder

[Martel actually started holding onto Zelos loosely around the waist an hour or so ago, after they went over a hilly patch of ground. They'd been riding for a few hours, she thinks, from the way the sun has been moving. She can't tell, of course. And she can't tell where they are, either. She's never been out this far from the Castle, really. That doesn't mean she's not enjoying, it, though.]

So, have you been to this place before? Wanderer's Yard.

Even though I'm pretty sure he thinks we are sometimes annoying, yes, he has us now. [And now she's curious.] ...How did you even meet him?

Eh, he likes us deep down! I can tell!

Me? Hmm, we started talking through the journal. When he first got here?

I would rather think so. [After the pancakes...]

...Yes, I remember. The word 'Unless'. I talked to him too.

Oh yeah, that really weird loss of his. Sure is a strange one.

Yeah... [She trails off because she knows what it means.] Anyway, after that is when I broke into his room for the first time.

[he snickers] Seriously? How come?

It seemed like a good thing to do. I mean, he couldn't give me a reason why he was really a hermit. Other that he had done something terrible and didn't deserve to go outside. Or some nonsense.

Ah, I could see that.

Did he...did he ever tell you what he did?

[...She figures she couldn't lie well enough to Zelos.] Yes, he did. I traded him a story for his.

[he nods]

He told me parts of it....after the whole reunion thing.

...Really? [She hadn't expected that.] What did he tell you...?

[There's a pause; sorry but he doesn't feel right talking about the family bit of it. Way too personal]

That he destroyed his world...or the valley he saw as his world, anyway.

[She sighs and nods. She can at least tell him that much.] Yes, he did.

Hm. Sounded pretty bad.

[What he can't bring himself to tell Martel, not yet, is that he could relate. The past selfishness, the foolish hope that maybe if you did this and this- your life would have meaning. Purpose. Or at the very least, an end to the pain. ]

[And the overwhelming guilt that comes after you realize the path you've wrought. That you were a complete fool. Even if Zelos made the right choice before it was too late...he remembered how close it was. ]

[But no. He wasn't ready to tell Martel that part of his story yet. Maybe one day, but not today.]

Still. He doesn't...need to lock himself away like that.

Of course he doesn't. He's just silly. Though, he did leave his room once that I know of without anybody dragging him. [When he brought her pancakes.]

Well, when Yuan was dead. He came and brought me pancakes that he made in the kitchen.

[Oh yeah..that day...He faces forward again and smiles to himself]

Heh. That was pretty sweet of him.

The pancakes were pretty good too. I gave him a hug. [She pauses.] I don't think he's had a hug in a long time.

Why? Did he freak out or something?

No, it just seemed like...he wasn't sure what to do with it. he was kind of awkward... [Martel, when is he not?]

[he snorts]

Martel, my darling, Once-ler's always awkward.
