[Nightmares are never fun, no matter where you go. But things take a bit of a turn for the worse when you've jumped into the mind of a ninja. A ninja that can look into other people's heads, to be exact.

So which path will you pick?]

[This is so unlike her, it's almost harrowing. To see her so scared and broken. How dare the castle do this to her. It had no right. No right at all.

He frowns softly, allowing her to cling as much as she wants. If it makes her feel even the slightest bit better, even the slightest bit secure that he's not going anywhere, he's all for it. He realises this would be the time to tell her how he really feels about her. That he really wouldn't ever leave her. That all she has to do is ask and he'd do anything she wished of him. That he - No. That wouldn't help her at all. She has Gale, someone she actually deserves, which is far more than he could say about himself. Gale'd show up eventually to save her from this. That's how it's supposed to be.

He sighs and rubs her back soothingly, resting his chin on the top of her head]

I won't go. I promise.

[Unfortunately, she knows that as much as anyone may want to promise her that they'll never go ... no one has ever been able to keep that promise. Not that it's their fault -- it's all the castle. But it doesn't change the fact that she knows it's a completely outlandish and stupid thing to say.

Right now, though, she just focuses on trying to calm down. She's practically curling right up in his lap, holding on like she might fall through the floor if she doesn't. She takes deep, careful breaths, trying to get herself under control again, though she's about as far from calm right now as she could possibly be]

[He doesn't appear to mind. He understands, he really does, that horrific moment as everyone leaves you. The desperate wish for just ONE of them to not stay as one by one they vanish from your life for good. It's the worst kind of feeling, and he hopes whatever this mess is, that it's not real. That everything will be back to normal and she never has to go through this for real.

His fingers move to her hair, brushing through it in an attempt to soothe her. Then, softly, with the tiniest hint of a smile, trying to keep her mind off this mess:]

Knock knock.

[Unfortunately for her, she is pretty damn sure this is real right now -- in fact, the thought of it not being real hasn't even crossed her mind. It feels real, and everything in her mind is telling her it's true -- after all, it's so easy to get swept away in a dream, even if it's unrealistic or silly.

The fingers in her hair are definitely soothing, and after a few moments some of her tension vanishes, and she turns her head a little to just let her cheek rest on his chest. Maybe if she doesn't let go at all, he'll stay. Wasn't that the mistake she'd made with Tsuna?

It surprises her when he speaks up, though, and it takes her a moment to remember the right response]

... Who's there?

[He certainly wouldn't deny her that. Anything that made her feel even marginally better. Anything that took even a small piece of her fears away from her.

To which his point. He continues the soothing hair stroking]

Aardvark.

[ ... well, she's never heard that word before, so:]

.... Huh?

[He gives an idle wave of his free hand]

It's a sort of animal, it doesn't matter in the scope of the joke. Just ask 'Aardvark who?'.

[ ... LMAO, onceler. she just pauses, before going along with it]

Aardvark who?

Aardvark a million miles for one of your smiles.

[oh my god, onceler. that's just ... so terrible and so cheesy, she can't help but let out a little amused exhale, sniffling]

That was awful.

[He chuckles a little, yes. Yes it was. But her caught that sound missy, and that's reward enough for suffering through telling a terrible joke]

And I've got a whole lot more where that came from.

[she'll shift a little to get comfortable next to him, and as close as possible without, you know, smothering him]

Tell me another.

[it's better than thinking about what she's sure will probably happen soon]

[He'll shift to keep an arm around her shoulders as further proof that he's never going to go anywhere so long as she still wants him there]

Okay.

[He squints, making a thoughtful humm, before:]

What do you get when you cross a library and an elf?

[the arm around the shoulders gets a little sigh -- a shaky one, but it almost sounds relieved]

I don't know, what?

[Are you ready for this, Ino? It's pretty terrible]

A shhhhh elf.

[LMFAO .... oh my god. she just pauses .... she can't help the little smile forming on her face, because as terrible as it is, it's also a little bit funny]

I changed my mind. Stop, before I die of terrible puns.

[That little smile makes everything worth it, and he can't help smiling in return]

Are you sure? I have a great one about peanuts.

... Alright, one more. That's it.

Okay. So two peanuts are walking down the street. [He pauses, then grins. This is probably the worst one yet, but he doesn't care. It's taking her mind off this horrible situation]

Then one is a-salt-ed.

[she just shakes her head, letting her arms loop around his waist, now]

I don't even want to know where you got those.

[A small smile crosses his face at that action, despite mentally berating himself for it. He really shouldn't let himself be comfortable with this, it'll only make him want something he can neither have nor deserves. This will only leave him falling deeper into something he's already struggling to get out of. He'd of thought he'd learned his lesson about hope by now. It only serves to hurt you further down the line.

Still, despite all this, the arm around her gives her a gentle squeeze]

I had a joke book when I was a kid. A bad one, it turns out.

[she honestly isn't thinking about that at all; it's just that she's craved human contact for so long, she wants to get as much in as possible before the inevitable occurs]

What do you get when you cross a snowman with a vampire?

[He tilts his head to one side in faux thought, before giving a shrug]

I don't know, what do you get when you cross a snowman with a vampire?

[there's a bit of a sly tone to her voice when she answers]

Frostbite.

[That does get a snort out of him]
